Sponsored Video: Dreams Of Life

In India, parents dream of their children getting a good education, a fantastic career and then settling into marriage and presenting them with grandchildren! As we seem to get wealthier, middle-class parents now try to send their children to schools offering an international syllabus, then hope that their children will go abroad to study or get into a good institution here – IIT and/or IIM. Parents save and sweat to make these dreams come true.

But some parents in India have more basic dreams for their children. Dreams of life. They hope that they live past the age of 5! Shocking, but true. Watch the video below to know more about this sad reality.

The video shows Gondappa, a resident of Thesgora village, Madhya Pradesh, India, walking on his hands all the way to a shrine to give thanks on his son’s birthday. This is his first child who made it past the age of 5! Most children in that village do not – since it has one of the highest rates of diarrhea in the India.

Lifebuoy through their Help A Child Reach 5 Campaign is making a difference in this village and other villages.
How? By promoting the simple act of hand washing with soap. Something you and I might take for granted. But not so in the villages. Hand washing with soap reduces the risk of diarrhea infections by 42-47%.

The good news is that you and I can help them make a difference – in the most simple of ways:

  1. A sad state of the country. I wish there are better medical facilities that are accessible to one and all and that we do not see so many causalities. It is really painful to see the children suffer. Would definitely help in ways I can. Is it ok to blog about the same and share? Will it help?

  3. What a touching story. There are so many things we take for granted. I love your take on the prompt though the story itself was quite sad.

  4. I still have a UNICEF poster that asks the question “What do you want to be when you grow up” with the picture of a child’s face – and the answer is “Alive!”. I remember being so overwhelmed to realize that reality.

This is such a good initiative!

In the cities we take life for granted. In this video the father is so elated about the life of his child. It may seem funny to us but in rural areas due to poor hygiene and sanitation , unsafe drinking water , kids do not survive beyond 5 years.

  10. Corinne ! this reminded me of a video I had seen years ago , wherein in some interior villages in our country , there are babies dying, because the women are not aware that a glass of water with a pinch of salt and sugar solution given to these babies can save their lives. Never seen this ad. thanks for sharing !

Hi Corinne! Sorry for being away for so long. Still dealing with my loss. I loved this video and shared it. We take so much for granted in our country. I pray that this campaign produces a lot of donations and creates worldwide awareness about the importance of clean hands. Bless you!

  12. This is such a wonderful initiative. Hand washing may seem such simple and routine thing but when missed, it can have fatal effects on the health. Thanks to such initiatives we can help save lives!

  13. Hi Corinne,
Heard a lot about you through fellow blogger posts on write tribe prompts . This initiative is indeed good, my mum always says all that one should pray for is a healthy child, everything else is secondary. Those words were ringing through my head as I went through the post…

Yes, I agree – that a healthy child is all one can truly hope for -and it seems that we can contribute to making more children healthy!

Appreciate your comment and the patience, Seeta.
