Jennae Cecelia’s poem (from her book, Deep in My Feels) is blowing up online! Women are connecting with it and sharing their own stories of self-discovery. Cecelia’s poem opens with the line, “i met my younger self for coffee at 10:15,”. You can read it here, if you haven’t already done so. I decided to take a shot at writing one too.
I Met My Younger Self For Coffee
I met my younger self for coffee.
She stirred her drink, eyes searching mine,
as if tracing the years written across my face,
as if hoping to find answers in the spaces between us.
“You made a brave choice,” I told her.
Her fingers tightened around the cup,
hesitant, uncertain.
“You chose passion over security.”
She nodded, but doubt flickered in her gaze.
“The road ahead won’t be easy,” I admitted.
“There will be nights you cry yourself to sleep,
when silence feels heavier,
than the words left unsaid.”
She swallowed, shoulders tensing.
“You will feel misunderstood
by the very people you love,
as if you’re speaking a language
they refuse to hear.”
Her hands trembled, but she held my gaze.
“You will give everything you have,
but it won’t seem enough.”
She exhaled sharply, bracing for the weight of it.
“But it’s not you,” I whispered.
“You will learn to value yourself,
to stand tall in your own worth,
to be unapologetically you.”
She let out a breath she hadn’t known she was holding.
And in that moment, something settled—
not peace, not yet,
but the quiet certainty that she would endure.

I met my younger self for coffee, did you? 🙂

What a wonderful poem, thank you for sharing! It makes me want to try to write one too. 🙂
You know what? I started writing a post on this prompt. The draft is still there but then somehow I just couldn’t finish it. Maybe, subconsciously I am too triggered to meet my younger self. I loved yours and as usual resonates with mine. Let me see if I can go back to the draft and finish it.
Wow! This is absolutely beautiful! I got goosebumps reading it!
Your coffee meeting with your younger self feels touching to me. I pray the younger Corinne feels the ease and assurance with her choices in life. I wonder what the present ‘I’ will have to say to the younger Anamika over coffee. It should be about her fears and her lack of self-belief. I will tell her – you are going to overcome most of your fears in the future and your self-belief will be so strong that you can achieve anything you put your heart into. Thank you, Corinne, for writing this post ♥️
Hi Corinne – I’ve seen this poem online recently too (an a couple of other responses to it). I’m thinking I may need to sit down with my younger self sometime soon and have a chat. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing your chat with your younger self – I can definitely relate to it.
I’m thinking that I will end up having a serious discussion or even a debate with my younger-self when I meet her. What I loved about your meeting, Corinne is your assurance to your younger self “You will learn to value yourself… to be unapologetically you.”
This was a beautiful read, Corinne. I saw this poem making rounds in insta. I feel I’ve nothing to show to my younger self, but everything to learn from her. I think that’s why I’m avoiding writing to this prompt.
HI Corinne. This is such a poignant and beautifully written piece… like a heartfelt conversation across time. The way you’ve captured the doubts, struggles and quiet resilience is deeply moving.
Yes, I met my younger self too. She had questions I couldn’t fully answer then, but I think she’d be proud of who I’ve become. 🙂
