I Met The Older Version Of Me

Remember the viral ‘I Met My Younger Self for Coffee’ by Jennae Cecilia? I responded to it and it’s one of my most popular posts. Now, Jennae has written another poem called ‘I Met The Older Version Of Me’ and I couldn’t resist responding to it. Also this forms a response to a prompt given by Sunita Saldana in her Poetry Circle.

I Met The Older Version Of Me

I met the older version of me
on an ordinary day.
She was smiling –
an easy, warm smile.

She said she was grateful.
She spoke of her past
without regret,
as something that had shaped her
and let her become herself.

Her faith had carried her,
not away from pain,
but through it.
She trusted more
because she had learned how.

She laughed often,
especially at herself.
She didn’t dwell on
aches or losses.
They were there,
but they weren’t her whole story.

She was still writing.
Still reading.
Still showing up for others
in quiet ways that mattered.

Before she left, she said,
“Keep going.
This is where we are headed.”

And when she was gone,
I felt lighter –
not changed,
just reassured
by the person I am becoming.

ChatGpt projects that this could be me 25 years from now – I don’t believe how young they think I’m going to be looking and complete with a nose job! 😉

Imagine meeting the older you. What would they say, what would they thank you for, what would they laugh about? You don’t have to make it perfect or deep. Just honest. If you do write, let me know. I’d love to read how you’re imagining the person you’re becoming.
