Life Is Like A Box Of Chocolates!

“Life is like a box of chocolates“, she said handing him a neatly wrapped box.
“But I don’t like chocolates!” he said, taking the box reluctantly.
“You take the pleasure out of everything!”
“I don’t like to be surprised.”
“But I love to receive and give surprise gifts.”
“What’s inside?”
“Open the darn thing, will you!”

He unwrapped a shiny new phone.

“Thank you, darling… just what I wanted!”
“I told you that surprises are great.”
“Yes. I’m wondering how surprised man in the store will be when I go to return this.” he said pulling out the exact same phone from his pocket.

This is a 100-word response to the prompt ‘Unexpected’ on the Facebook Group GBE2. Although this is not based on a true-life incident – it could happen in our home 😉

Do you think life is like a box of chocolates?

May you be inspired – every day!

  1. Ooo Corinne! You ust got me thinking before I go to sleep 😛

    How extraordinary!

  2. Oh yes Corinne, I do believe that ‘life is like a box of chocolates’!  I say that to my children all of the time.  You never know what you are going to get in life.  I loves this!  Hoping you have a fabulous weekend!

  3. oh girl… I giggled out loud… because YES it most certainly could happen in my house! fabulous writing! I heart chocolates and surprises…

  4. Yes definitely!! Life is a CARTON full of chocolates Corinne.. and I shall eat every bit of chocolate in it and relish it and enjoy both the sweet ones and also the bitter ones. 🙂 Are you with me????? 🙂

  5. LOL! What a turn of events. I would be heartbroken but only for a little while. These days, I take the hubby along and ask him to buy what he likes when I want to gift him. Surprises might not be that much fun ;-). Life is definitely like a box of chocolates; you pick up a different flavor everyday and therein lies the excitement!

    1.  @Rachna That’s a good idea, except that my husband won’t even come along – he tells me he doesn’t need anything! But I agree about life being like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get – and that’s half the fun!

  6. Oh fun! At least he was appreciative. But if you buy a phone without telling your wife, that might not be a connected couple. But I love short and sweet posts!

  7. Haha it sounds like they compliment each other well in the relationship, at least.  🙂  I love surprises, though if they’re bad ones I’m not always the best at handling them…

  8. Very clever.  I recently sent someone a gift in a box that originally held something else.  I didn’t even think about the “misrepresentation.”  Luckily, she liked the actual gift better than what the box suggested.

    1.  @galenpearl My Mom just sent me a box of goodies in the toaster box and called me to tell me she was sending me a toaster – I told her that I didn’t want or need one – and would send it back to her – but she was only teasing! Glad you’re friend, like me, enjoyed the actual gift more!

  9. I like surprises but it sure takes away the fun if the surprise is exactly what I already have. Yes, life indeed is a box of chocolates. We never really know what we’re going to get.

    1.  @Anne @ Writers Space I love surprises too – but I was half-teasing my husband via this post since he doesn’t like them! I love the philosophy of seeing life as  a box of chocolates – it’s been working for me so far.

  10. What a surprise! I usually ask my family members what they would like for a gift, since surprises can turn awkward. Also children grow up fast and their tastes change too quickly for us to take them for granted while gifting them something. I usually enjoy any gift, even if it is not something I like very much because of the thought, the giver put into buying it for me.

    1.  @zephyr I love surprises but I’ve learnt that not everyone does – so it’s better to ask like you say.  For me too it’s always the thought that counts.

  11. Yes, I do think life is a box of chocolates, just like Forrest Gump’s mother taught him.  You never know what you’re going to get.   Corinne, I like your little short piece here.  Sweet!

  12. I love surprises, especially when they’re as good as chocolates! 😉  I guess I could say I’m a chocoholic person, I always have one in store.  Belated Happy Birthday, Corinne.  I hope you have more delicious surprises in the years ahead.

  13. Is life like a box of chocolates?

    Maybe or maybe not.

But, life surely is full of surprises and changes (like the gifts). But, there is one thing, we can always influence and change what we get. Take this same example and apply it to a mother-son relationship.

He could have mentioned that we would love to receive a specific kind of gift. Same thing goes for life. To an extent, we all have control over the surprises we get.

We may never know what we are going to get, but we can have an influence without knowing 😉

Thank you for the wonderful post, Corinne 🙂

    1.  @Jeevanjacobjohn I do believe that we can never know what we’re going to get in life, but we can be prepared to receive anything and be grateful about it too. And yes, unless we ask and be specific, it will always be a lottery! 🙂

  14. It is!

I watched the movie Forrest Gump and this phrase is very common in that movie … “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get!”
