If you’re a regular reader of Everyday Gyaan, you know that my Word for 2024 is ‘Intentional‘. Each month, I intentionally choose something to focus on. This month, it’s Intentional Decluttering.
Intentional Decluttering In September
One thing that I’m clear about is that decluttering is more than just having less stuff in our lives! It’s self-care that goes beyond clearing up clutter.
These are my four resolutions for this month:
- Start the day with intention
- Practice gratitude
- Single-tasking over multi-tasking
- Regular decluttering.
I’ve been thinking of the ‘stuff’ I need to declutter / get rid of:
- activities that drain energy
- thoughts that make me doubt myself
- relationships that give nothing in return
- physical items that serve no real purpose in our lives
- the need to be in control
- tasks that someone else could do
- old goals that no longer matter
- the feeling that I need to be an expert on something before I write about it
- storing unnecessary information in my head
- sorting out some legacy papers, etc
- sorting out my own papers/ books/ e-files.
Now I know there’s no way I can do this all in a month, but I’m trying to begin. I remind myself that I’m trying to make space for thoughts, emotions and things that really matter :
- Instead of overwhelming myself, I’m setting small goals. For example, I’ll declutter one drawer, let go of one toxic thought or relationship, or delegate a task each week.
- I’m journaling and using tools like note apps to stop storing unnecessary information in my head. This helps me focus better and think more clearly.
- I’m reminding myself to celebrate every small victory—whether it’s clearing out a drawer or letting go of a draining relationship. It’s a journey, not a race.
- By breaking it down and taking small steps, I’m making space for what truly matters in my life.
“The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don’t.”
