Life, Noticed : How To Be A Noticer of Kindness

Julia Ferenbacher’s Sunday Spark a couple of weeks ago was to pay homage to the recently deceased poet Wendell Berry. She suggested that we use his poem How To Be A Poet as a prompt. Through September, I’m focusing on the theme of Connection and I believe that Kindness is certainly a great part of being connected. So I decided to take the title of the poem as a prompt. Here’s my offering – How To Be A Noticer of Kindness.

How To Be A Noticer Of Kindness

Watch out for kindness.
Seek it actively.
Find it in the small acts
That one often takes for granted.

Open yourself to kindness,
Even if it comes
From the most unexpected quarters.
Allow kindness to wash over you
As you plumb the depths of yourself,
And then see it in others—

In quiet smiles and acknowledgements,
In small gestures
And large heroic acts,
In the widow giving of her mite,
In the graciousness of someone famous.

Find it in the people rescuing others,
Saving animals,
Risking life and limb.

Find it in people saying kind words,
In those reaching out to help their neighbours,
In the quiet kindness of strangers,

Noticing, paying attention, and letting
The others know that she is seen,
Understood, and accepted.

Be a noticer of kindness,
For kindness noticed is like a seed planted
In the garden of Good,
Growing steadily and slowly,
Overtaking the world!
