I am always in awe of adventurous people – those mountain climbers, those deep sea divers, people who ride or drive across continents… At first, I think, my own lack of adventure makes me look up to them even more. But thinking about this more deeply I start to say to myself, “You have been adventurous. Just differently”. So perhaps, daring greatly is not just about adventure sports? Love. Whoever associated it with cheesy symbols and photographs and the whole array of love dovey products was way off the mark. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m a sucker for romance. I read plenty of romance novels and watch sappy movies. But I’ve discovered that love really can’t be tied into an easy parcel. Love is messy. Love Is Messy Love gives us strength, but it also makes us vulnerable. Real relationships (and I don’t just mean the romantic kind) call for us to show our true, messy selves. When I was young, I watched my parents take up a cause for justice. I watched them getting side-lined and unpopular with their own kin. And I swore to myself, that someday I too will stand up against injustice. I’ve done that in small ways. I’ve had cause in the last 15 years to stand up against injustice – but it’s mostly the kind where it involved injustice against me. Can I stand for others? I think of one of my favourite poems – Dylan Thomas’ ‘Don’t go gentle into that good night’. I know he was talking about fighting death.…
