Day 10 – Food: Eat Your Way to Happiness

7 Health-Food Tips To Promote Happiness

#1  Feed your brain with fats: Did you know that 60 percent of your brain is made of fat? That’s why you need to consume healthy fats on a regular basis. Our diets lack omega 3, and we need some omega-6 as well. These essential fats are very delicate and can turn rancid easily, so try to get your fats from healthy foods such as avocados, coconuts, and wild-caught fish. If you buy supplements, be sure they are high quality.

#2 Hydrate for cellular energy: The adult human body is 50-75 percent water. Water removes waste from cells, transports nutrients to cells, regulates body temperature and helps you digest food. Since it’s the largest component in your body, not drinking enough water can lead to serious complications. It’s vital to drink enough clean, uncontaminated water every day.

#3 Fuel your brain with healthy protein: You’ve heard that protein is important for energy and for building muscle. Good quality protein is also vital to keep your neurons talking to each other. Otherwise, you might find it difficult to concentrate or have memory challenges. Choose organic protein from legumes such as peas, beans, and lentils, or from the sea or organic animal sources.

#4 Eat the right carbs: Carbs get a bad rap these days because most people think of them as sugary treats, candy or fries. The truth is that fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates too, and they fuel your body with vitamins and minerals, giving you energy. Whole grains such as spelt, barley, and oats are also excellent sources of energy, along with legumes such as chickpeas and lentils.

#5 Think green: The fastest way to fuel your body is to drink fresh green juice. You’ll feel a surge of happiness and energy because the vitamins and minerals go straight to your cells. When you’re tired from lack of sleep, ongoing stress, or feeling overwhelmed, try a green drink instead of a caffeine fix for a healthy shot of energy.

#6 Clean up your gut: The saying goes that you are what you eat. But science now shows that you are what you absorb. This means that your body can only use what it assimilates. If your gut is not working properly, undigested food particles can wreak havoc with how your brain and body function. You may have intolerances to certain foods without realizing it. Wheat, dairy, soy and corn are common foods that people have trouble digesting and absorbing, which can lead to fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, and chronic illnesses. Consult a health professional if you suffer from any ongoing issues, to see if your gut may be the problem.

#7 Read labels: All packaged food have labels. Find out what’s in that box, jar or can. Most additives are not there for your health, but to make the products last longer on the store shelves. Popular additives such as MSG are called excitotoxins, and over time they damage your brain. Sugar, salt, and oils make products tasty, but along with artificial coloring and flavoring, they are damaging to your health. Fresh organic produce doesn’t have a list of ingredients, so opt for that whenever you can. These tips may take some time to implement, but changing even one thing is a move in the right direction.

I read something today saying that we all are given 168 hours a week to do something with. Everything we eat becomes a part of us; it makes total sense that we monitor everything we intake to make sure it is healthy – and helpful – to us. The ancients who declared that our bodies are temples were so correct.
